Burgham Park Chef - Midlands Chefs

Burgham Park in Northumberland has appointed Paul Blakey, former head chef at Linden Hall, to provide a top class restaurant service at the club. Co-owner of Burgham William Kiely told Golf North East: "We have been working very hard on the course, which is very important with the likes of the Northern Region PGA Tournament and raising the profile of Burgham. With a good chef now on board, we are going to get non-golfers coming here as well and hopefully a better name for Burgham Park.

"What a lot of people in the area don't realise is that we are open to the general public. This is not a private members club; anyone can come here, be it for a drink or a meal. Burgham Park is open to everyone, so a good restaurant service was the next logical step."

Paul, who is aged 37and from Hetton-le-Hole, currently lives in the Bedlington area with his wife Debra and their nine-year-old son Liam. He is looking forward to the challenge ahead and together with Debra, hopes to make a name for himself at Burgham.

He has 20 years experience in the catering trade. After leaving college, he worked locally in Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham. He then gained further experience in London before moving to Jersey where he successfully ran a restaurant for two years.

Ten years ago, he returned to Northumberland to work at Linden Hall.

Paul said: "I'd worked at Linden Hall in my younger days and within a year of going back, I got the Head Chef's job. During my time there, we were awarded two rosettes which we successfully kept for six years; in fact they've still got them now."

He added: "The pressure that is put on you to keep the rosettes is second to none and that is the reason why I've moved on. I met William through a third party and with wanting a new challenge and William wanting to take the club forward, he gave me the opportunity to open a restaurant here at Burgham Park. It has always been my ambition to have my own business and I think we have a great future here.

"I'm not looking to win any awards but you can still have fantastic food, a great atmosphere and a good time without having award plates above the front door. The restaurant is currently open Friday and Saturday nights and we hope in due course, to extend it to further nights as the word gets out.

"Obviously we have to look after the golfers and cater for them, but to have a restaurant with the views that we have here is fantastic. I will be looking to provide catering for functions, parties and private dinners, basically anything at all. The club has a dance floor and with my wife who has catering experience, nothing is a problem."

With a great golf course, excellent clubhouse and now, superb food, Burgham Park is maturing into a top class act
