AA accolades for 13 top UK restaurants

The AA today announced the latest additions to its restaurant awards, with 13 eateries being honoured with three AA rosettes.

The winners, which include both newcomers and long-established restaurants across the UK, were praised by the AA for their "innovative menus" and "inventive chefs".

Giovanna Grossi, the AA's hotel services group area manager, said there was a trend now for restaurants to serve food that was "contemporary yet classic", offering a back-to-basics approach.

"Emphasis is placed on the clarity of flavours and decent sourcing of high-quality ingredients, creating a dining experience that is refined yet relaxed, and which can be found at each of our new three-AA-rosette restaurants," she said. "The AA is delighted to be awarding such deserving establishments, which continue to raise the standards and encourage excellence in the industry."
Additions to the three-AA-rosette holders include newcomers such as Gary Rhodes's latest venture, Rhodes W1 Restaurant at the Cumberland hotel and the two-Michelin-starred Pied Terre's new sister restaurant, L'Autre Pied as well as D&D London's long-standing Orrery in Marylebone.

Outside the capital, La Bcasse in Ludlow, Shropshire Driftwood in Rosevine, Cornwall and the West House in Kent were recognised with the award.

David Moore, proprietor of L'Autre Pied, which opened in November, said he was thrilled to have gained this recognition in such a short time.

"The AA awards are very highly regarded in the industry and winning three rosettes puts us up there with a very good bunch of restaurants," he said. "It proves that we are doing what we set out to achieve: create an elegant yet informal fine-dining restaurant with high standards."

In a separate development, Caterer has learnt that Peter Birnie, the AA's long-standing chief hotel and restaurant inspector, has been made redundant. The move follows a managerial restructure within the organisation.

AA hotel services manager Simon Numphud said: "As part of this new managerial structure, several individuals have been promoted to manage dedicated key accounts and inspection teams. Birnie is currently in a consultation period with the AA to explore other opportunities within the organisation."
